Welcome back to my monthly Rocksbox review! Since my one pair of hoops broke, I've been looking for a replacement pair, so I decided to be a little ridiculous with 80s hoops.

I mentioned in my RTR review that I needed jewelry to go with a plunge neckline gown for a gala, and I couldn't find anything I liked anywhere (I even scrolled through Rocksbox competitors like Switch and Vivrelle) and landed on something I found on Etsy.

The items I picked for May are statement pieces that I normally wouldn't wear and definitely wouldn't buy, but the whole point of rentals is to try out new styles and designs. And well, I succeeded!

Rocksboxis ajewelry styling and rental service. Members pay a flat rate every month to get unlimited access to the Rocksbox collection and the option to buy whatever they love at a discounted price. Each month, Rocksbox will curate sets of three pieces to send your way, including at least one piece from your ever-growing wishlist. Members can keep and wear the three pieces they receive for as long as they want, or they can switch out sets whenever they'd like. Rocksbox also offers a monthly credit so you can buy the pieces for less.

Concerned about cleanliness? Each piece is sterilized with alcohol jewelry cleaner using medical grade products and handled with jewelry experts wearing gloves.

This is a review of the monthly plan for $21, which includes shipping to the US only.

Just like other subscription boxes, when I signed up for Rocksbox I had to set up a style profile that asked me questions like my metal preference, and which necklace, earring, bracelet, and ring styles I liked the most.

Let's check out this month's delivery!

About this item: I don't know if I'd say these earrings are preppy or what, but they're very unique and unlike anything I've ever worn before. These pearl pinwheel earrings take the traditional pearl and flip them upside down, and around (but they don't actually spin). Plated in 18k gold, the earrings are inspired by Peggy Gugenheim silhouettes (yes, the Guggenheim Museum), they feature faux pearl buttons set upon a whimsical pinwheel design.

They measure at 1 1/4 in diameter.

        Condition: Like new.

Review: They're heavy and whenever I'd lean down, they'd twist and almost flip over on my earlobes. It was difficult to get them to stay in place and because they're so wide, they covered up my second hole. Would I buy them? Never.

About this item: I've rented Lele Sadoughi Lily Crystal Earrings in the past, but this pair is smaller and they're pearly. They're crafted in mother of pearl acetate with a Czech pave crystal center and a surgical steel post. They measure at 2 1/4 x 1 3/4 and they're pretty lightweight on too.

          Condition: Like new.

Review: From a rental perspective, it's a great statement pair. They're awesome for the summer and surprisingly enough, pretty light too. For some reason I had a hard time attaching the backing. Now, would I buy them? No way.

About this item: Ok, maybe I'm a little tacky, but these earrings took me back to my teen days of working at Claire's Boutique where I was an ear-piercing specialist. Gosh, there must be so many adults walking around with uneven holes today—and when I was bored, I'd pierce my own ears too.

Anyway, the pyramid stud hoops are high polish, 18k gold-plated, open-back hoop earrings featuring raised pyramid shapes with clear crystal centers. They measure at 1 3/4" and they're on the heavier side.

            Condition: Like new.

Review: They're so much fun... takes me back to the good old days of the 80s and Salt-N-Pepa! I really wanted to purchase these earrings, but the price is way too high. Then I went down a rabbit hole (no offense Mr. HGL) on Google to find them for less, but no luck. Aside from the price, they're quite heavy and my hair kept getting stuck in the open part.

            The Verdict

All three items are lovely in their own way and theses earrings are perfect for weddings, vacation, or a trip to your local vineyard! If the Luv AJ hoops were cheaper with all the discounts, I would've purchased them, but I can't see myself spending more than $40. I might continue my hunt on Etsy since I tend to have good luck there.

In a perfect world, I'd find a pair of real diamond hoops at an estate sale for less than $200, but I'd have better luck finding Taylor Swift tickets.

Value Breakdown:Rocksbox membership costs $21 per month. At retail, the three pieces would cost me $448. Yay! Thank you for adding Rocks Box to your review rotation. I love the mother of pearl lily earrings. I like those hoops, but all of the prices were too high. I’m sure you’ll find the right pair soon.

Mary, you have brought up shopping for accessories on Etsy often. I noticed that some of my coworkers in their late twenties and early thirties like to even buy clothes, not previously owned or vintage clothes, on Etsy. I am from Generation X and am a 15-20 years older than these coworkers and buying clothes on Etsy would never occur to me. I wonder if buying fashion on Etsy is more popular with your generation? Is this something your friends do too? It’s interesting how shopping has evolved over the years and buying from purveyors of small batch hand-made clothing and accessories may be a newer model of shopping that young people have accepted. What do you think?
